Questions

About the Multiplication Tables Check

What is the Multiplication Tables Check?

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory check taken by pupils in Year 4 in England. It is an on-screen, timed test of multiplication recall covering the 2 to 12 times tables, made up of 25 questions with a strict time limit on each one.

Does this practice test match the real MTC format?

Yes. It runs 25 questions at 6 seconds each with a 3-second pause between them, and gives 3 practice questions first, exactly as the real check does. It also follows the official question-distribution rules: tables 2 to 12, the KS1 tables (2, 5 and 10) capped at 7 of the 25 questions, and no repeated equations including commutative pairs such as 3 × 4 and 4 × 3.

How long does the practice check take?

About 4 minutes from start to score. Pupils can re-run it as many times as they like.

Do pupils need an account to practise?

No. The practice check is free and needs no login — pupils can start straight away on a phone, tablet, laptop or interactive whiteboard. Signing in with a code from a teacher or parent saves scores to the cloud so progress is kept across devices.

Which times tables does the check cover?

Tables 2 to 12. Questions are weighted towards the harder tables — the KS1 tables (2, 5 and 10) are capped so that most of the check covers the tables pupils find hardest to recall at speed.

How is the practice check scored?

Out of 25, reported as soon as the check finishes, along with a breakdown of every answer given so pupils and teachers can see which tables need more work.
