On that last row — it matters more than it looks. A tool that a head teacher already recognises is easier to get approved than one they've never heard of, whatever the feature list says.

Where we're ahead. At the School tier — up to 500 pupils — we come out roughly 20% below their school plan, and about half their price once you add the two bolt-ons, because the deeper analytics and practice goals they charge extra for are standard on ours. If your school fits inside 500 pupils and you'd want that reporting, we're the cheaper option on these numbers.

Where we're not, and it's worth being blunt about it. If your school needs our Large School tier, they are considerably cheaper: our $249 works out around two-thirds more than their £116.80, and their one price covers unlimited pupils where ours stops at 1,000 places. A large UK primary or a secondary is better off on price with Times Tables Rock Stars — and even against their fully-loaded price with both bolt-ons, our Large School plan only draws level rather than winning. We'd rather say that here than have you work it out after the invoice.

The one thing price doesn't settle: practice or analysis? Every child generates 36 mastery data points here — twelve tables, three ways of practising each. A 60-pupil school produces about 2,160, and a head can genuinely sit and read that grid. A 1,000-pupil school produces 36,000, and nobody is reading that by hand. Below a few hundred pupils, both products are practice tools and you should buy the cheaper one. Somewhere above that, the question quietly changes from "which app do the children use" to "who is going to make sense of this" — and that's what our reporting, heatmaps and assistant are built for, at no extra cost. It is a different question from which is cheaper, and on cheaper they still win at that size. If practice is all you need for a thousand children, their flat fee is very hard to beat and we won't pretend otherwise.

If you're buying for more than one school, note that their "unlimited pupils and teachers" is unlimited within a single school — their pricing page footnotes it "*Belonging to the same school." A trust or federation therefore buys one subscription per school. So do we, so this isn't a point in our favour — we sell one licence per school too, with 10% off from three schools up. It matters because it changes the arithmetic on both sides: multiply whichever price applies by the number of schools, and compare the totals rather than the headline. On our current pricing a multi-school trust comes out ahead with us at the School tier and behind at Large School.

One caveat on our side of the table. Our prices are set in US dollars and our payment provider converts at checkout, so the pound figures above move with the exchange rate. We've given approximate pounds rather than a false-precision conversion for exactly that reason; the checkout total is always shown before you pay. The comparisons above hold across the range the rate has traded in recently.

Australia works out differently from the UK — which is the clearest illustration of why a single "TTRS price" doesn't exist. Against their base plan, our School plan is about 53% less and our Large School plan is about 1.6% less — which is to say Large School and their base plan cost effectively the same, and we'd be overselling it to call that a saving. The gap only widens if you'd want their two paid add-ons, which is capability our paid plans include as standard; on that footing Large School is about 40% less. But note what you give up for it: they have no pupil cap and we do, and their price includes printed worksheets and ours doesn't.

The workings, so you can check us: their school price is quoted excluding GST, so we've compared it against our prices excluding tax rather than adding GST to theirs. US dollars converted at 1 USD = 1.4223 AUD (31 July 2026); currency moves, so treat the conversion as indicative and the tax basis as the point. Their family price is quoted including GST, so it's handled separately in the parents section rather than mixed in here.

The single-teacher row is the one that changes decisions. A permanent free plan and a $49 upgrade is a decision a teacher can make on a Sunday night; a whole-school subscription is a decision that needs a budget holder, and often a term.

The practical difference is less "more data" than "less work". Both products will tell you which children are struggling. Ours is built so you can ask a question in ordinary language and get an answer back in ordinary language, which for most teachers is the difference between a report they actually read on a Tuesday morning and one they mean to look at later. Whether that suits you is a matter of taste — some people would much rather have the grid in front of them, and that's a perfectly good reason to prefer theirs.

To be fair to them: "no stats without paying" would be wrong, and we're not saying it. Their base school plan does include reporting. What sits behind the two add-ons is deeper analytics and practice goals specifically — and we haven't verified in detail where the line falls between base and add-on, so if reporting depth is central to your decision, ask them directly rather than taking our word for it.

There will be more. Their multi-school arrangements, mobile apps, offline behaviour and small-school pricing all came up in our research and we could not verify any of it, so it isn't in the table. Assume the list of their strengths is longer than this one, not shorter.

For most UK families, theirs is the cheaper option, and it isn't close in the first couple of years. At £9.00 a year — £7.50 once you take the VAT off, to sit beside our tax-exclusive price — a family would need to keep going for about three years before our one-off pack came out ahead. We'd only argue for ours if you have more children than their three, or you actively don't want a subscription renewing each year. That's a real preference, but it isn't a saving, and we're not going to dress it up as one.

The honest version, in either market: if you want a year of times-tables practice for one child and then you're done, theirs is cheaper and it isn't close. Ours makes sense if you have more than one child, or a younger one coming up behind, or you simply don't want another subscription renewing quietly every year. Break-even is around 21 months in Australia and around three years in the UK.
